The East Wing of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC was created by I.M. Pei in 1978. The crisp geometric monumentality of the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC has been called the first late-modern building. The East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC has a collection of modern art only. The West Building has paintings, sculptures, and graphic art from the Middle Ages to the present. Hence, two different artworks represent different styles of the buildings, but the two seperated buildings of the gallery form an entirety, which are integrated into a combination of tradition and modernism. Also, the interweaving of the internal space makes visitors between the past and the present through time and space.
